I bought my first ever trench coat at a Zara in Paris. It was unintentionally during Paris Fashion Week and I was there with my sister Goldfields Girl. We had visited the nearby first Chanel store when we wandered in off the street into the Zara. I saw the coat and fell in love. Now I have added this beautiful trench from Review Australia to my wardrobe, along with this perfect dark floral print winter midi-skirt.
Because I’m really nostalgic, my sister and I decided to take the photos for this blog post on the most ‘European’ looking street corner in Ballarat. It seemed fitting for such a pretty trench, which I haven’t stopped wearing since I got it. Wearing lots of layers in winter can be a bit ‘meh’ if you’re thinking about jackets and blazers with tight shoulders that restrict movement. This jacket totally surprised me by being flexible. If I cross my arms, the material moves with me, which feels wonderful. Not only that, it falls beautifully! I wear skirts more than anything so it suits my style perfectly.
The skirt is definitely for winter. The material is strong and thick so minimal layering is required to stay warm. It’s also a dark colour like my normal winter mood. My gosh! I love winter. In saying that, my love of it doesn’t mean I think we should only ever have one season all year round. Changing of seasons is important for mental health. I think it helps measure the passing of time and personal growth.
I love winter because it allows for you to wear multiple layers, to stay inside and keep warm. It’s a season of romance, in which you get comfortable under a blanket; you link arms with friends as you walk. Drinking a hot drink becomes an intimate experience. Winter smells like freshly ground coffee and red wine. It’s for whisky and jazz. It’s the resilience of a warm body against cold air. It’s dim light, sultry darkness and occasionally breakthroughs of crisply cold, light blue sky. It’s for dark chocolate and poetry and spy films with buttered popcorn.
Since I love winter, it’s lucky I actually live in a city that does winter enough to notice. I think there’s a bit of a myth that Australia is sunny all over, all year round. Where I live we’ve been lucky enough to have 3 days of light snow this season. The sky is all bare branches and white, dull clouds. I love it. If you’re ever in the area, please come and visit.
